- I have learnt that I should be more analytical of my research write down what inspires me and let it inform my ideas more.
- In addition allow more time for: research, idea generation and drawing as I think I did not do enough of that.
Here's the brief for ANI09206 project:
This unit focuses on the development of students’ skills in environmental computer visualisation. Students begin to exploit the possibilities of animation within an environment to create a virtual setting to support dynamic character interaction.
Working in teams to simulate conventional animation industry work flow, students are introduced to the visualisation and creation of an environment in 3D using modelling, texturing and lighting techniques. They learn how to create and populate this environment with contextually appropriate assets, in a consistently defined and implemented visual aesthetic that is derived from their drawing and research into environments both actual and virtual.
The Unit aims:
- To introduce industrial, team based, animation workflows.
- To develop personal reflection upon individual contribution to group endeavour.
- To develop UV mapping and texturing skills.
- To develop the ability to generate considered and analytical visual responses to research.
For this project you will be working in teams of four or five students. You will all be working towards a final collaborative short film but will have the opportunity to fulfil clear and separate roles within the team.
- You will be working to create an animated environment.
- You will be collaborating not only with the other animators in your team, but also with designers from the environment design course.
- Their designs will form the starting point for your work.
This environment will be modelled in 3D, UV mapped, textured and lit based upon the research of materials and environments as initially designed or proposed by IDEAS students. This research will consist of practical site visits (such as the trip to Barcelona and alternative London based venues) and associated drawing and photography, as well as academic research via the web and LRC.
This environment must demonstrate integral animation, it could be mechanical such as machinery, doors, windows, windmills etc, or it could be more organic, and atmospheric, such as the effects of wind on plants, weather conditions etc. It could be a much more long term animation to show the effect of years passing, rather than minutes. For those of you who feel that you are more character animators than computer visualisers you can focus upon contextualising the designed environment by populating it with characters using that environment, it may be that the environment is being used in an unintended or unexpected way that has evolved through public interaction with the space. (Was the South Bank designed for skateboarding or parkour?).
It may be easier for you to think about defining the way in which you will approach this project by choosing one of the themes listed below.
a)Changes over time (historic).
b)Changes in weather or lighting (climatic).
c)Changes in use of the environment (contextual).
Although you will be working as part of a team towards your final animation, you will also be required to provide evidence of your individual contribution to the project via a blogged design journal where you will document your personal research, experimentation, and acquiring of new skills.

This is our proposed thoughts that we would to aim for.
Digital Environments project.
Exterior environment
Theme and setting- Ancient market place/plaza.
The surroundings will be working sector of the city. This will be based off historic cultures i.e. Ancient Greece, Ottoman empire and Egyption history. The central focus will be the grand temple, which is the basis for this scene, around which the environment will be built.
Around this temple there will be stalls, various buildings and a few houses. These will be decorated based off the cultures that we will research. We will also use predominantly reference photos of our own (Budapest, Athens and British Museum) and from secondary sources (books, internet and magazines).
Concerning animatable environment- we’re aiming for a day to night transition with wind dynamics that will affect various objects throughout the scene. If time permits we will incorporate a character.
The story is in the environment.
Pipeline-
Research.
Initial designs.
Development.
Refine designs to get final designs.
Maya Modelling/Zbrush sculpting.
Texturing- Maya- UV mapping and Photoshop/Zbrush-normal maps.
Setting up the final scene.
Lighting.
Rendering- Mental Ray
Compositing- After Effects or Premiere Pro.
My specialism will be: modelling the statues/sculptures of the environment and some buildings. My intention is to research Ottomen Empire, Greek and Egyption sculpture and architectural history (as mentioned in our "thoughts" above); I hope to get a better grasp on the history and produce a unique story for this environment.
I also intend to look at fine artists such as J.M.W. Turner and Constable and Concept Artists from d'artiste concept art book first and then see where this leads me. I wish to look at composition for designing concepts.
Throughout this period I want to come up with story backgrounds for these sculptures and this environment in order to tell a story and make it visually evident in the design stage and to our audience.
What I also want to look at is:
Water drainage.
Economy and currency.
Farming- meat, fruit and vegetables.
Religion- place of many faiths or one religion adopted by all? One God or many?
History of the religion, the details.
Materials of buildings.
Is there a strong contrast between the wealthy and poor?- like Cape Town in Africa.
